Explore Music Theory

Summer is a great time to IMPROVE your theory SKILLS! This group will learn through fun and educational activities designed to teach fundamentals of music. This is NOT bookwork and is appropriate for all instruments. We will use movement, games, crafts and other activities to learn and grow.

Please note: These classes follow the curriculum of the Music Literacy program as accepted by the WSMTA. Additionally, these classes are designed for students 8 years of age and older.

LEVEL 1

Applied Theory

  • Steps, skips, whole steps and half steps
  • Rhythm involving quarter, eighths, half and whole notes
  • Letter names of treble and bass clef notes

Ear Training

  • High, low and middle sounds
  • Forte and piano sounds
  • Direction of notes ascending, descending and repeating
  • Pulse of a song
  • Matching descriptions to songs

 

LEVEL 2

Applied Theory

  • Intervals of 2nds - 5ths
  • Sharped and flatted notes
  • Rhythm involving dotted notes and meters of 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4

Ear Training

  • Legato and staccato sounds
  • Direction of notes ascending, descending and repeating
  • Pulse of a song
  • Matching descriptions to songs
  • Written dictation (Notating what you hear)

 

LEVEL 3

Applied Theory

  • All intervals including major and minor
  • Key signatures
  • Rhythm involving dotted notes and simple & complex meters

 Ear Training

  • Recognizing major and minor sounds
  • Rhythm selection and playback
  • Matching descriptions to songs
  • Written dictation (Notating what you hear)

 

LEVEL 4

Applied Theory

  • All intervals including major and minor; ascending and descending
  • Musical forms including D.C. al fine, da Capo, etc.
  • Rhythm involving dotted notes, triplets and simple & complex meters

 Ear Training

  • Recognizing major and minor sounds
  • Recognizing intervals
  • Identify melodic material in different clefs
  • Matching descriptions to songs
  • Rhythmic dictation
